Two men face 23 charges in taxi debit-card fraud

By News staff

Two Toronto men are facing a total of 23 charges in connection with a taxicab debit-card fraud investigation.

Police allege that after a passenger paid their fare, a taxi driver would switch the customer’s card for one resembling their financial institution.

The stolen card was then used to withdraw funds and purchase retail items.

Police started their investigation in the fall of 2015. Then on June 2 of this year, the financial crimes division executed several search warrants and arrested two men.

Muhammad Tariq, 26, and Ahmed Dogar, 25, are charged with several offences including fraud, possessing a credit card obtained by crime, and forgery. They are scheduled to appear in court on July 5.

Police are concerned there may be other victims.
