Few turn out at community vigil for slain pregnant mother

A vigil was held Sunday evening in memory of the 35-year-old pregnant woman who was gunned down in a Jamestown neighbourhood just one week ago.

Community leaders gathered to show their mounting frustration over the violence in the city, and the vicious killing of Candice Rochelle Bobb.

Police have not yet revealed the identity of any suspects or any possible motives.

“This situation cannot go unnoticed,” Bishop Dr. James Robinson said in an opening prayer.

Bobb was shot and killed while sitting in a car with three others near Jamestown Crescent in Rexdale. She was the only one struck by bullets. Doctors had to perform an emergency C-section to deliver her baby, who is now in stable condition.

“There’s no excuse for foolish violence acts and random killing, no more, no more,” the Bishop told the crowd. “You should not be afraid of your own home.”

The event started shortly before 6 p.m., and brought out mostly community leaders but not many residents.

“This is the problem, the people are afraid, they don’t want to come out and have their face showing,” said attendee Princess Boucher. “This is where the changes need to be made, more people should have been here.”

Community leaders tell CityNews a viewing will take place for Bobb on Thursday at the Brampton Funeral Home and Cemetery between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The funeral and burial will take place the following day at the same location.
