Shoppers fatal stabbing suspect fit to stand trial in spite of ‘bizarre rants’

By News staff

The woman charged in the fatal stabbing of a medical technician in Toronto’s underground PATH system last December has been found fit to stand trial.

Rohinie Bisesar, 40, was back at the Old City Hall courthouse on Thursday for her psychiatric assessment hearing.

Bisesar is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Rosemarie Junor.

Junor, a newlywed, was stabbed at a Shoppers Drug Mart at 66 Wellington St. W. on Dec. 11. She died five days later in hospital.

Bisesar was originally charged with attempted murder, but that was upgraded to second-degree murder and eventually to first-degree murder in February.

Her next court date is on June 6. She will no longer appear at mental health court, but it’s not known where the hearing would take place. It is also not yet known when an application for bail will be filed. Bisesar will continue to make appearances and get disclosure from the Crown until a trial date has been set.

Earlier this month, Bisesar fired her lawyers as a report on her mental health – an assessment at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health – was submitted in court. However, it was not dealt with at the time.

Since her arrest in December, she hasn’t had a bail hearing.

Last month, her former lawyer Calvin Barry said Bisesar had been seen by a psychiatrist in jail since her arrest and her fitness to participate in her case was not an issue until recent court appearances.

“She started exhibiting bizarre behaviour in open court, talking over the judge,” he explained. “We now have some concerns, as does the judge, as does the prosecutor, as to her fitness because of the rants.”
