Truck driver, trucking company charged in fatal January crash on Hwy. 400

Ontario provincial police have charged a truck driver from Quebec in connection with a crash that killed a 69-year old man on Highway 400 in York Region in January.
The crash happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 400, between King and Aurora roads, just after 9 a.m. on Jan. 27.
A transport truck was travelling in the southbound lanes of the 400 near King Road when a set of dual wheels from the trailer snapped off. One of the wheels bounced into the northbound lanes, hitting a GMC Yukon. The driver lost control and his SUV ended up in the ditch.
The driver of the GMC, identified as Paul Philip Koenderman, was taken to hospital where he later died.
The truck driver did stop, but a kilometre-and-a-half south of the scene after realizing he lost a set of his wheels.
Bruno Bergeron, 30, St. Rouyn-Noranda, Que., faces a charge of criminal negligence causing death. He is scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on June 14.
The trucking company, Transport Leo Labelle Inc., from Bearn, Que., is also facing a charge – wheel separation, commercial motor vehicle – under the Highway Traffic Act, and the case is due in court on July 22.
