Family home of Maple Leafs prospect Mitch Marner goes up in flames

By News Staff

A home in Vaughan that went up in flames Thursday afternoon belonged to the family of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Mitch Marner.

A video of the blaze posted to YouTube shows the house on Autumn Hill Boulevard engulfed in flames.

The family was not home at the time, having left to watch Marner’s London Knights play an OHL playoff game against the Niagara Ice Dogs.

Marner, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Thursday, said he learned of the loss following the game.

“It’s scary,” Marner tells Sportsnet after viewing news footage of the fire on his mother’s phone. “But at least everyone is okay. No one is injured.”

Two animals, a chocolate Lab named Burbank and and a cat named Winston, were saved by neighbours and emergency crews.

Fire officials say they managed to preserve a part of the home but a number of personal items were lost in the blaze.

Damage has been estimated at $400,000 and York Regional Police say it’s too early to determine the cause of the fire.
