Peel police are conducting a pedestrian safety blitz, launched just days after a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Mississauga.
A 70-year-old woman using a walker was trying to cross Lakeshore Road East, east of Shaw Drive, around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, when she was hit by a grey SUV. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pedestrian safety blitz, which started on Sunday, runs until this Saturday. Police say they’ll be talking to pedestrians about ways to stay safe.
Police say even if you have the right of way, it doesn’t always mean it’s safe to cross.
Pedestrians are being reminded not to rely solely on traffic signals and stop signs, to look first and ensure all vehicles are stopped before stepping out onto the road, to remove ear buds, not to jaywalk or cut through traffic, and to keep your eye on your surroundings not on our cell phone.
On Jan. 1, new laws went into effect across the province, requiring drivers to wait for pedestrians at crossovers and school crossings to clear the entire roadway before they can proceed.
