Two Ontario men arrested on terrorism peace bonds appear in court, no charges laid

Two Ontario men arrested by the RCMP on terrorism peace bonds will return to court next month.
Samuel Aviles and Kadir Abdul were placed in police custody at Pearson International Airport on Friday after returning from Turkey.
The two men were the subjects of peace bonds ordered under Section 810.011, Fear of Terrorism Offence, of the Criminal Code of Canada Section 83.
Aviles and Abdul made a brief appearance in court on Thursday. Their case has been held over until May 20.

Abdul’s lawyer Anser Farooq said he has yet to be told what the allegations are against his client.
“At this point I really don’t know anything,” he told reporters outside the courthouse. “I’m not even aware of the allegations because I don’t even have the synopsis yet.”
Farooq is also legal council for Kevin Omar Mohamed, a 23-year-old Ajax man arrested last month by the RCMP anti-terrorism police under the same section of the Criminal Code.
Mohamed was later charged with participating in the activity of a terrorist group, as well as weapons charges.
According to the RCMP, Mohamed travelled to Turkey in 2014 to join Jabhat Al-Nusra, a listed terrorist entity in Canada.
When asked if he believes the charges against Abdul will be upgraded, similar to the way they did with Mohamad, Farook couldn’t comment.
“I have no idea. Particularly since I don’t even know what the allegations are,” he said. “But given that they both were released already, I would expect not.”
There has been no word on if the two cases are connected, but court documents show Aviles and Mohamed lived on the same street in Whitby.
