Concerns over terror-related charges against Ontario man

By News Staff

While a 23-year-old Ontario man awaits a second court appearance following his arrest that may have engaged in terrorist activity, some concerns are being raised about whether or not police have too much power to detain suspects.

Bill C-51 is the controversial anti-terrorism act that was passed last year that enables law enforcement to arrest people for fear that may commit a terrorist act. It’s this “fear of terrorism” that prompted the arrest of Kevin Omar Mohamed, who was detained on suspicion of five or six terror related offences, but not charged. Instead, the RCMP charged him with two weapons offences for possessing a knife.

Mohamed’s lawyer, Anser Farooq, says police are concerned about the context of certain emails and online chats and are now applying for a peace bond. That would mean that, once freed, if Mohamed continues with any activities deemed suspicious, he could be re-arrested and held for a longer period of time.

Mohamed’s lawyer will be back in court Tuesday where it will be up to a judge to decide if there was any wrongdoing. The Crown says he could face even more charges at that time.
