Mail stolen from Toronto Money Marts; identity theft a concern

By News Staff

Toronto police have issued a warning about identity theft after hundreds of pieces of mail were stolen from Money Marts across the city.

Police said Monday they had discovered a fraud lab near Bloor and Parliament streets. The lab was part of an investigation into mail theft and identity theft at local Money Marts in Toronto, especially in the Beach neighbourhood.

At this and other labs, police found financial statements, bank documents and cheques that had been stolen. With that information, police allege, fake driver’s licences were generated and created in the victims’ names.

Fake bank statements, fake SIN cards, and fake government identification was all generated.

Direct deposit statements, tenancy information, student loans, T4s and medical documents were also found.

The best way to get rid of unwanted mail is to shred it and then recycle it. Police also suggested locking the mailbox.

Police have not announced any arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
