Cyclist who appeared fine after York Region crash dies in hospital

York regional police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal crash involving a cyclist in Richmond Hill last month.

The 76-year-old man appeared fine after he was struck by a car on Waterhouse Way near Elgin Mills Road and Yonge Street back on Jan. 30. The driver of the 2010 silver Nissan Rogue remained at the scene and checked on the cyclist, who said he was fine and asked that police not be called.

The following day, a family member contacted police to report the crash. Officers went to the man’s house and took a report and, following a conversation, the cyclist agreed to go to hospital to have his injuries – which appeared to be minor – examined.

On Feb. 1, police were told that the 76-year-old’s condition had worsened and that his injuries were now considered life-threatening. Five days later, police were informed that the man had died.

Police are now asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident and has not yet spoken with investigators to please come forward. As well, anyone in the area who may have video surveillance that might have captured anything to do with the accident is asked to call police immediately at 1-866-876-5423 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
