Toronto police officer’s body pulled out of Lake Ontario

By News Staff

The body pulled from Lake Ontario near Polson Pier was that of a Toronto police officer, CityNews has learned.

Sources say the officer was Darius Garda, a member of 51 Division.

The Toronto Police Marine Unit discovered the body Thursday morning after reports that a man had fallen into the water on Wednesday afternoon.

Garda was involved in a shooting in April 2010 in which a civilian was killed. Fifty-year-old Wieslaw Duda – a father of two – died in the shooting. There are concerns that Garda was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“I think that (the shooting) troubled him but I didn’t think he was a danger to himself or others,” his lawyer, Gary Clewley, told CityNews.

Sources also say that he had recently separated from his wife and had financial troubles.
