From the bear to B.A. Baracus: Glenn Ennis on the life of a stuntman/actor

By Neil Davidson, The Canadian Press

Former Canadian rugby star Glenn Ennis has been many things in his second career as a stuntman/actor.

“You know what, sometimes it’s fantastic. It’s really cool,” said the 51-year-old Ennis, who has served as Steven Seagal’s stunt double from New Mexico to Romania among other jobs.

“And sometimes you get there and you hear what you’re going to do that day and you go ‘Oh crap.’ There’s just no movie magic in falling down those stairs. It’s just going to suck.”

Most recently in the news for helping bring the murderous bear to life in “The Revenant,” Ennis has compiled quite a resume. Here’s a look at a few of those projects in his own words:

“Walking Tall:” It was fantastic working with The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). I did a little driving and I (stunt) doubled another actor by the name of Kevin Durand. A couple of fight scenes and diving for cover from a bunch of gunfire. But it was excellent working with The Rock, he’s pretty cool.

“The A-Team:” I was in a school bus as a prisoner. I spent about a week in there with MMA fighter Quinton (Rampage) Jackson (who played B.A. Baracus) and he’s a character. So for a week it was like being in a very small standup comedy club because he just went on and on all day. He was great.

“Resident Evil:” I was in Toronto doubling an actor. I was in the back of a car with nothing but a vest on. So bare arms and it was minus-20 and the windows of the car had been smashed out. I was having a gunfight out the back window and freezing to the point where my teeth were chattering and I could barely hold this big gun. I was worried it was going to fly out of my hand because my fingers were so numb.”
