A Toronto man has been sentenced to six months in prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash in November 2012.

Tom Samson, 35, was hit by two vans on Davenport Road at Lansdowne Avenue while riding his bike to work in on Nov. 23, 2012. He later died in hospital.

Samson was a married father of two and a popular Grade 2 teacher at Swansea Junior and Senior Public School. He taught at the school for eight years.

Miguel Oliveira, 22, turned himself in 40 hours after the crash.

Oliveira was on his way to work as a landscaper when he hit Samson. He was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death and pleaded guilty last May.

The driver of the other van is not facing any charges.

Oliveira will serve his sentence on the weekends, and he’ll be on probation for three years.

He is also been banned from driving for two years and has to do 240 hours of community service.

The Crown was asking for 12 to 18 months in prison while the defence wanted 60 days.

Oliveira will only have to serve three months since he’s been given credit for time served.
