Trending: $2 coffee turns into $300 fine for texting in a Tim Hortons drive-thru

Hopefully Tim Hortons coffee is made of liquid gold, because a man in Alberta certainly paid for it.

Police handed out a $287 ticket to a man who was apparently texting while in a Tim Hortons drive-thru Beaumont, Alta., Torstar News Service reports.

That’s the equivalent of more than 143 double-doubles.

Metro News says someone named A.J. Daoust was in a drive-thru waiting for his coffee when a police officer ticketed him for texting.

The officer told Torstar that the vehicle was moving and that Daoust was rude when approached. (Probably because he hadn’t had his coffee yet, we’re guessing.)

According to Torstar, Alberta police say it’s an offence to use a phone while operating a vehicle, even in a drive-thru.

Apparently Daoust has told local media that he may go to court to try to reduce the fine.

We have no idea if the cop was just stopping by for a doughnut.
