Former Richmond Hill employee charged with fraud

A former employee of the Town of Richmond Hill is facing fraud charges for tampering with the books at an ice rink.

Perry Silverman, 58, is accused of defrauding the town of more than $100,000.

York police say the alleged offence took place over a five-year period. Police allege an employee, working as an ice facilities booking clerk, had been tampering with arena booking records and keeping the payments.

The police investigation was prompted by an internal review of ice rental utilization where a number of irregularities were found with ice rental transactions, according to a statement from the town.

“Public Trust is the foundation of what we do as elected officials and public servants,” Mayor Dave Barrow said in a statement.

“Any breach of trust is completely unacceptable. We take this matter extremely seriously and are working with the police as they continue their investigation.”

Silverman will appear in a Newmarket court on Dec. 31. He is charged with fraud over $5,000 and breach of trust by public official.
