Man charged in alleged online dating con: Halton police

Police in Oakville say a 58-year-old man is facing charges in an alleged online dating scam.

Halton police say a 60-year-old woman met a man through an online dating site in August, and they had a brief relationship during which she allowed him to stay at home for about a month.

Investigators say the woman began to notice jewelry and art missing from her home and when she confronted the man and ended the relationship, he disappeared.

Police say Enrico Cagnotti was arrested during the weekend at a motel in Georgetown, Ont., and charged with theft over $5,000.

Investigators say Cagnotti was also wanted by police in Toronto, South Simcoe, and Peel Region on charges of breach of probation, fraud, uttering threats and forcible confinement.

Police say members of the public should protect themselves when using online dating sites as they can unknowingly introduce people to scam artists or fraudsters.
