Liberals win majority in Newfoundland and Labrador election

The Liberals have won a majority government in the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial election.

The victory Monday ends 12 years in power for the Progressive Conservatives.

The party suffered from a downturn in the economy after the departure of the extremely popular Danny Williams in 2010 and missteps by his successor, Kathy Dunderdale.

Paul Davis, who was elected leader just 13 months ago, warned several times during the campaign about a hidden Liberal agenda to cut government spending and public service jobs.

Premier-designate Dwight Ball echoed the sentiments of newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying residents wanted politics of hope and change.

Ball won his riding of Humber-Gros Morne.
