TRUDEAU AND DION IN MALTA FOR COMMONWEALTH SUMMIT

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Stephane Dion are in Malta for the 53-nation Commonwealth summit. Dion says there have already been lively debates during what he describes as a “training camp” on climate change ahead of next week’s United Nations conference in France. The battle against ISIL is also expected to be discussed at length in Malta.

LEBANON, JORDAN, TURKEY ALL TRYING TO SEND REFUGEES TO CANADA

Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon are all hoping to be the main source of the 25,000 Syrian refugees that Canada has committed to taking in. Nearly four million Syrians have flooded into those three countries, straining their resources. Canada’s ambassador to Beirut, Michelle Cameron, says the selection of refugees will depend on who needs resettlement the most.

CROWN TO GRILL FORCILLO

Prosecutors will start cross examination today of the Toronto police officer on trial for killing a teen on an empty streetcar in 2013. Const. James Forcillo is on trial for second degree murder, which he has pleaded not guilty to. He has testified he felt he had to shoot Sammy Yatim who came at him with a knife.

VANCOUVER POLICE ISSUE WARNING ABOUT ONE-PUNCH ATTACKS

Vancouver police say alcohol and bravado appear to be fuelling a disturbing trend of one-punch attacks that have left three people dead, including a 60-year-old man punched outside a downtown bar in August. Police say at least 10 people this year have fallen to the ground unconscious after being hit once in the head.

HARRIS ART SETS RECORD AT HEFFEL ART AUCTION

Three paintings by Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris shattered pre-sale estimates and sold for $9.5 million Thursday night at the Heffel Fine Art Auction House fall sale in Toronto. His top-selling canvas, entitled “Mountain and Glacier,” set an auction record for the artist and sold for $4.6 million, far above the expected price. The auction house said 157 works sold for a combined $23.4 million to set a Canadian record for a fine art auction.

REDBLACKS DOMINATE CFL AWARDS

Henry Burris and the Ottawa Redblacks dominated the CFL awards banquet Thursday night. The 40-year-old quarterback was named the CFL’s outstanding player for the second time. Ottawa coach Rick Campbell was named coach of the year, receiver Brad Sinopoli was selected top Canadian and tackle SirVincent Rogers got the nod as top lineman.
