RCMP seek two men who allegedly behaved suspiciously near Rogers Centre

RCMP are seeking help in identifying two men they allege behaved suspiciously near the Rogers Centre nearly three months ago.

Supt. Lise Crouch said a passerby told private security about seeing the men on the John Street Bridge near the stadium in the afternoon of Aug. 31.

The Toronto Blue Jays were hosting a game that day against the Cleveland Indians. Stephen Harper was in attendance at the game.

The incident was then reported to the Mounties’ national critical infrastructure team via a suspicious incident report (SIR) – a system that is used to collect information on suspicious incidents that may be related to national security, police said.

It’s unclear what the men – who police said are “persons of interest” – were allegedly doing and Crouch said that information will not be released until officers speak with the pair.

“The person who witnessed the behaviour felt that the behaviour was such that it warranted reporting it,” Supt. Lise Crouch told reporters on Thursday morning.

She said police are trying to identify the men so that they can speak with them.

“It’s important to us to speak to the males to figure out the story to why they were actually there,” Crouch said.

Photos of two men walking, one of them carrying a backpack, have been released. Both are described as between 22 and 30 years old, with a medium build and brown skin.

Crouch said there is “no imminent threat to public safety,” but would not say what the two men were allegedly doing.

“That we’re not going to share at this time because those activities are still under investigation. So until we’ve had an opportunity to speak those two males, we won’t be releasing it.”

She said there were six other reports of suspicious incidents in the area – in the same corridor east and west of the John Street bridge – that occurred over the course of a week, and that all but this one have been resolved and found not to be criminal.

“We were able to put those ones to rest. We were able to absolutely identify that it had no concern for us to continue,” Crouch said.

Investigators don’t believe the incidents are linked.

“We don’t believe so at this time, we believe they’ve all been separate,” Crouch said, adding the two men were not part of the other incidents that were reported as SIRs.

Police said they have other photos and video that they are working on but stressed the “public should not concerned at this time.”

Anyone with information is being asked to call the RCMP at 1-800-387-0020, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477).
