Parents charged after two kids found in unlocked van outside casino

A Toronto couple is facing charges after they allegedly left their two children in a van parked outside a casino while they went inside and gambled.

Police said officers were called to the Great Blue Heron Casino in Scugog on Tuesday for reports of two small children sleeping in a van.

The children, age three and five years old, were left inside the unlocked van for about 30 minutes before the parents were located inside the casino.

Officials said neither of the children needed medical attention but were cold, as the temperature outside was at the freezing mark.

The parents were arrested and children were taken into protective custody by the Children’s Aid Society.

The 58-year-old father and 35-year-old mother have been charged with two counts of child abandonment. Their names are being withheld to protect the identities of the children.
