Icy roads, bridges to blame for numerous morning crashes

The combination of wet roads and cold air made for some icy roads and bridges, resulting in a slew of crashes in Toronto on Tuesday morning.

There were so many that Toronto police issued a public safety alert warning of treacherous driving conditions in parts of the city.

In one instance, an infant in an incubator was being transported from Oshawa to the Hospital for Sick Children when the ambulance was struck on the southbound Don Valley Parkway near Lawrence Avenue just before 7:30 a.m.

The baby was not hurt and was transferred to another ambulance.

One person has serious injuries after a car flipped over following a three-vehicle crash near Victoria Park and Belmore avenues.

In another case, two people were taken to hospital – one with serious injuries – after two vehicles collided head-on Prince Edward Viaduct over the DVP. Reports suggest the road was a ice rink at the time.

Eight vehicles were involved in a crash on a icy brige near Morningside and Ellesmere avenues. Minor injuries were reported.

Police were also called to the Kingston Road and Beechgrove Drive area in Scarborough after a seven-vehicle crash.

The city says it has done one round of salting on bridge decks.
