TTC cash fare going up 25 cents, tokens going up 10 cents

TTC riders can brace themselves for another fare hike.

TTC commissioners met at city hall on Monday to vote on their 2016 operating budget, which includes a number of fare hikes to balance the books.

The transit commission will implement the following changes:

  • A cash fare hike of 25 cents
  • A 10-cent increase to the price of a token

However, the price of Metropasses — which has seen a jump of 45 per cent in the past decade — will be frozen.

“We froze the Metropass really for the first time in over a decade,” TTC chair Josh Colle said. “That is a reflection of the fact that if you look over the last 10 years, the price of a Metropass have gone up over 40 per cent where cash fares have largely been untouched.”

Coun. Shelly Carroll says she knows the fare increase has made people unhappy.

“What we tried to do in the fare increase is to give a break to others, particularly students and seniors, we’re trying to freeze their fares,” Carroll said.

The fare hike goes into effect in January.
