Rooming house fire sends three people to hospital

A fire that sent three people to hospital on Wednesday began in a rooming house and charges are pending, Toronto Fire said Thursday.

The three-alarm blaze broke out in the bathroom of a house on College Street near Lansdowne Avenue around 5:30 a.m.

Toronto Fire alleges the house didn’t have enough smoke detectors and the ones installed weren’t working properly.

The building also did not have adequate fire exits or proper fire-rated door, floors and ceilings.

There were eight people in the home at the time, Toronto Fire said, three of which were treated for smoke inhalation.

As the fire raged, one person had to be talked out of jumping from a second-floor roof area. Fire crews quickly rescued the person using a ladder.

At its peak, 18 fire trucks and 75 firefighters were involved.

After the fire was knocked down around 6 a.m., Fire Prevention staff inspected the home and found numerous Ontario Fire Code violations. They believe the home was a rooming house and will be laying charges in the Provincial Offences Court.

The penalties for Fire Code violations run up to $50,000 and or a year in jail for individuals, and up to $100,000 for a corporation.
