Traffic stop in Brantford ends in four-vehicle crash, assault: police

By

Police in Brantford say a man is in custody and refusing to identify himself after a traffic stop on Tuesday morning turned into a major collision, an assault on a Good Samaritan, and attempted robbery.

Officers stopped a pickup truck in the area of Dalhousie and George streets believing it was stolen, but as they were searching for the serial number of the vehicle, a passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and fled the scene, travelling the wrong way with the hood of the truck still up.

The officers did not pursue the truck, but attempted to set up spike belts north and south and east of where the vehicle was last seen travelling.

A few minutes later, the truck was in a head-on collision in a crash that involved three other vehicles an left one of them on fire.

Investigators allege the accused then assaulted a person who had stopped to render assistance and attempted to steal that person’s vehicle before being taken into custody by police.

One person was taken to hospital and Brantford police say the Special Investigations Unit has been called in.
