Rockies ‘disappointed’ after Jose Reyes arrested for domestic abuse

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested for domestic abuse in Hawaii after allegedly assaulting his wife on Oct. 31, according to Hawaii News Now.

The charges were made public early on Tuesday morning.

Reyes allegedly argued with his wife Katherine at their room in the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. According to Hawaii News Now, Katherine “told responding officers that Reyes grabbed her off the bed and shoved her. Sources say she also told police that he grabbed her throat and shoved her into the sliding glass balcony door.”

Katherine was taken to hospital. Reyes has since been released on bail.

The Rockies responded on Twitter, saying they were “disappointed” and “concerned” to learn of the allegations.

The 32-year-old hit .274/.310/.378 in 116 games between the Rockies and the Toronto Blue Jays with seven home runs, 53 RBI and 24 stolen bases. Reyes, Jeff Hoffman, Jesus Tinoco and Miguel Castro were dealt to Colorado in exchange for Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins on July 28.

On Aug. 21, MLB and MLBPA announced an agreement on a Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. This is the first reported incident since that announcement.

“As evidenced by our Joint Domestic Violence Policy, Major League Baseball understands the seriousness of the issues surrounding domestic violence, and our Policey explicity recognizes the harm from such acts,” the MLB tweeted at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

“Consistent with the terms of this policy, the Commissioner’s Office already has begun its investigation into the facts and circumstances. Any action taken by the Commissioner’s Office in this matter will be wholly in accordance with this Policy.”
