Michael Friisdahl has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, starting his new position in December of this year.
Friisdahl will replace Tim Leiweke.
Leiweke was appointed the position in April 2013 and announced that he would depart the company in August 2014. Leiweke stayed on in an interm basis while MLSE searched for a replacement.
MLSE owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Marlies and Toronto FC.
“Given our unparalleled sports executive and team leadership, MLSE’s CEO search focused on the appointment of a seasoned Canadian business executive to lead the organization and we’ve found exactly what we were looking for in Michael,” said Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of MLSE.
Friisdahl served as president and CEO of Air Canada’s leisure group since it was formed in 2012.
“As a Torontonian, I’m thrilled by the opportunity to focus all of our resources on supporting the Leafs, Raptors, TFC, Marlies, Raptors 905 and TFCII, and making Toronto the championship city that our fans deserve,” said Friisdahl.
Tanenbaum said he wanted to sincerely thank Leiweke for his contributions and wished him all the best in the future.
