The Latest: Police say trio used a gun stolen from unlocked car to rob, kill 2 in California

SAN FRANCISCO – The latest on the killing of a backpacker and a yoga teacher in California (all times local):

1 p.m.

Police say a homeless trio wandering Northern California used a handgun stolen from an unlocked car in to rob and shoot to death two people.

San Francisco Police Lt. Toney Chaplin said the handgun was reported stolen on Oct. 1 from the Fisherman’s Wharf neighbourhood in San Francisco.

The body of 23-year-old Audrey Carey was found two days later in Golden Gate Park. Carey was shot in the head.

The body of 67-year-old Steve Carter was found Monday near a popular hiking trail in Marin County, 20 miles north of San Francisco.

The three young people were arrested in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday. Police say the suspected murder weapon was recovered during the arrest.
