Controversial ‘unscripted’ Wynne documentary to air Saturday

A controversial behind-the-scenes documentary about Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne finally hits television screens this weekend.

Premier: The Unscripted Kathleen Wynne will air on CTV’s W5 at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The documentary, produced by White Pine Pictures, followed Wynne for 100 days leading up to the budget unveiling in April. The premier gave the film crew “unprecedented, up-close-and-personal access to her day-to-day life.”

“A healthy democracy depends on open, accessible government,” Peter Raymont, the film’s producer, said in a release.

“This documentary gives viewers the rare opportunity to be a fly on the wall, following one of Canada’s foremost political leaders and witnessing how government decisions are made.”

The film delves into her role as a public servant, her home life, and policies her government put in place during her time in office like the spring budget and a plan to end sexual violence and harassment. It also depicts the now infamous Sudbury byelection that became the focus of a police investigation.

The documentary was initially commissioned by TVO, but was shelved back in May after the director walked away from the project.

At the time, the publicly-funded television station said it was backing out of the documentary out of concerns about its “editorial integrity.”

According to reports earlier this year, OPP investigators asked to view footage from the un-aired TVO documentary because the film may have information on the Sudbury byelection in February.

It was reported that some footage may surround the allegations made by former Liberal candidate Andrew Olivier, who said he was offered an appointment to step aside in the Feb. 5 byelection for Wynne’s preferred candidate, former New Democrat MP Glenn Thibeault.

Last month, Ontario provincial police laid criminal charges against veteran Sudbury Liberal and party fundraiser Gerry Lougheed, 61, in connection with bribery allegations in the byelection.
