2 boys killed in Hwy. 401 crash were sons of high-ranking Mexican military official

The two boys killed in a massive highway crash involving up to 20 vehicles on Friday were the sons of a high-ranking Mexican military official, CityNews has learned.

One of the boys, aged 12, died at the scene of the crash on Highway 401 near Whitby. The other, aged 10, died Monday in hospital.

The boys’ parents remain in hospital with serious injuries. Consular officials confirmed that the father is a lieutenant colonel with the Mexican Ministry of Defence.

The family was reportedly vacationing in Canada at the time of the crash.

Two other adults also died at the scene of the devastating crash, which police believe was caused by a transport truck failing to slow down in a construction zone.

More than a dozen others were injured.

“With all these vehicles crumpled up, it’s an unbelievable scene here with steel and aluminum twisted around from these vehicles that are not even recognizable as cars,”  Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said while surveyed the carnage.

An investigation is ongoing, but so far no charges have been laid.
