Marco Muzzo to remain in custody until bail hearing later this month

A bail hearing has been adjourned to later this month for a man facing charges in an alleged drunk driving crash that claimed the lives of three children and their grandfather in Vaughan.

Marco Muzzo, of King Township, 29, faces a dozen impaired-driving offences and six charges related to the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle after he allegedly crashed into a minivan carrying six members of a family last Sunday.

He appeared in person at a courthouse in Newmarket on Friday morning. At the brief hearing, Muzzo walked into the prisoner’s box looking solemn and sporting a scruffy beard.

Muzzo’s lawyer, Rudi Covre, has previously said he didn’t know how his client was going to plead. Veteran defence lawyer Brian Greenspan is lead counsel.

It was up to Greenspan to decide whether Muzzo’s appearance would go ahead as a bail hearing. It did not, and Muzzo did not enter a plea.

On Friday, Greenspan requested that the bail hearing be adjourned to Oct. 19, the day of the federal election. Muzzo will be remanded back into custody.

Muzzo’s legal team says this was done “quite inadvertently,” adding “we did not intentionally schedule it for election day.”

Some members of Muzzo’s family were at the courthouse, surrounded by their private security detail.

The family did not speak to the media as they left the courthouse.

As the family left in multiple SUVs, a woman could be heard yelling “justice” in the background.

Greenspan, who stopped to speak with reporters, said this is a “tragic situation” for everyone involved.

“Marco is first of all devastated by the horrific loss of life, and has expressed to me on numerous occasions his condolences and sympathy to the family,” Greenspan said.

“And again, the Muzzo family extends its condolences and sympathies to the families involved.”

However, Greenspan didn’t answer any specific questions relating to the case.

“There’s not going to be any responses to specific factual questions. We have not received, until this morning, police disclosure, and despite the suggestion that the media has gained information quite improperly from police sources,” he said.

Candlelight vigils were held Thursday for Daniel Neville-Lake, 9, his brother Harrison, 5, their sister Milly, 2, and the kids’ 65-year-old grandfather who died following the crash.

The family has announced that two public visitations will take place this Sunday at the Brampton Funeral Home and Cemetery on 10061 Chinguacousy Road – the first from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the second from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The funeral services will be private.

The Muzzo family owns the construction company Marel Contractors and is worth nearly $1.8 billion, according to Canadian Business magazine.

The family has expressed their sympathies to the Neville-Lake family.
