Blue Jays’ magic number down to one after Yankees’ loss to Red Sox

The magic number for the Toronto Blue Jays to clinch the American League East is down to one after the New York Yankees lost to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

New York is running second in the AL East and was spared the possibility of the Blue Jays clinching the division title when they were rained out in Baltimore.

Instead, the Jays and the Orioles will play a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 4:05 p.m. Marcus Stroman will pitch for the Jays in Game 1. Then at around 7 p.m., R.A. Dickey will pitch the next game.

Toronto needs only one win or another Yankees loss to wrap up its first AL East title in 22 years, and the Jays have a pair of socks to thank for helping the team out.

New York’s playoff push was delayed once again by its longtime rival when the Red Sox got two homers and five RBIs from rookie catcher Blake Swihart in a 10-4 victory on Tuesday night.

Michael Pineda and the Yankees began the day looking to lock up at least a wild card, but that chance was washed away when Minnesota was rained out in Cleveland. New York needs two wins in its final five games – or some help – to reach the post-season for the first time since 2012.
