Montreal man, 80, charged in fatal Danforth hit-and-run

Toronto police have charged an 80-year-old Montreal man after a fatal hit-and-run on the Danforth last week.

At the time, witnesses told CityNews the victim had attended the Madinah Masjid mosque for Friday prayers and was sitting outside on a curb using his phone when a van backed into him.

Police said Tuesday the accused was driving a silver Chrysler Town and Country van in the rear parking lot of the mosque, located at 1015 Danforth Ave. at Donlands Avenue.

The driver “accelerated in reverse,” police said, colliding with a fence at the back of the parking lot.

The victim, a 49-year-old man, was struck and pinned against the fence.

The suspect drove away. The victim was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police say the driver initially left the scene, but later returned and is now in custody.

Muhammad Farooki, 80, of Montreal, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He will appear in court on Nov. 9.

Friends of the victim say his name was Ibrahim – a construction worker who moved to Canada from India about 10 years ago. Police have not identified the victim.
