Ding-dong: Mel Lastman Square bells keep residents awake all night

Did you have trouble getting to sleep last night? You may have had some issues if you live near Mel Lastman Square and their infamous bells.

The bells, nicknamed “Mel’s Bells,” located in the square on Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue East, normally ring from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m..

But, 680 NEWS listener Michelle Herder said they were chiming all night long – every hour, on the hour.

“I heard the chimes go off and I thought that maybe I slept through my alarm and it was morning,” Herder laughs. “And then I looked at the clock and I realized it was midnight.”

“So it rang 12 times and we had this song that goes on afterwards that usually just goes twice a day, but all night it’s been going every hour.”

Herder said the chiming sound was quite loud and “crystal clear,” and that she could hear it in her condo, which is located across the street.

“I could hear it with my earplugs in,” she said.

Half asleep, Herder called 311 and officials mentioned they would have someone check into it, but the bells continued to ring. She then sent them a tweet at 3 a.m. to follow up. But, the bells are still ringing.

“People need to sleep. (Bells chime as I type this) Toronto is breaking its own noise by-law,” she tweeted to @311Toronto.

“We are sorry to hear about this. We will see what can be done to fix the issue,” the city tweeted.

“Hopefully by tonight it will be resolved,” Herder said.
