Derek Drouin becomes first Canadian to grab world gold in high jump

BEIJING, China – Canada’s Derek Drouin has captured gold in high jump at the world track and field championships in Beijing.

The 25-year-old from Corunna, Ont., was the only jumper to clear 2.34 metres in a jumpoff.

The competition was decided in a jumpoff between Drouin, Ukraine’s Bohdan Bondarenko and China’s Zhang Guowei, the only three jumpers who were clean to that point.

No jumper cleared 2.36 metres, and the bar was lowered to 2.34.

The medal was Canada’s eighth of the meet.

Drouin won bronze at both the 2012 Olympics and 2013 world championships, and then last month captured gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto.
