Teen charged in death of Lecent Ross freed on $5K bail

“The system sucks. It needs to change. The child is dead and this little kid is going to be outside having fun.”

That was how Blossom Johnson reacted to news that a teen charged in the death of her niece — 14-year-old Lecent Ross — was freed on $5,000 bail Thursday.

The 18-year-old, one of two teenagers charged in the mysterious July shooting death, was silent as he left the Finch Avenue courthouse.

He’s been charged with criminal negligence causing death.

A 13-year-old boy faces a more serious charge of manslaughter in Ross’ death.

The 18-year-old can’t be named to protect the identity of the younger accused.

Ross was fatally shot in a townhouse on Jamestown Crescent. For the first time, her family learned more details about her death on Thursday. Those details are under a publication ban.

“People get into fights, they can’t get bail. People go stealing they can’t get bail, just stupid little things…I’m so upset,” Blossom Johnson fumed after learning the teen had been released.

As part of the conditions of his release, the teen must stay 300 metres away from the townhouse where the shooting happened. He can’t contact his siblings and can only speak to his mother in the company of his grandparents, who acted as his sureties.

He’ll be back in court on September 25.

The 13-year-old will appear in court for a bail hearing next Tuesday.
