Blog: Norm Kelly visits Twitter Canada, his match made in heaven

Toronto city councillor Norm Kelly (Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt) paid a visit to Twitter Canada Thursday.

It was like a trip to the Mother Ship for Kelly. The 74-year-old has become a web celebrity with tweets that tout his love of hip hop, or showcase a seriously absurd sense of humour, or both.

“Increasingly, [my tweeting] became more personal, less political, and more enjoyable,” the former deputy mayor told CityNews in April.

Kelly has defended Drake in rap feuds, offered up some timeless social commentary, and generally goofed around. And the Twitterverse has rewarded him with 122,000 followers to date.

It’s worth remembering that, as at least one critic has pointed out, there’s a real politician behind those wisecracks — one who makes serious, sometimes unpopular decisions.

All policy matters aside, though, Kelly has injected municipal governance with a rare dose of levity.

Here’s a selection of some of Kelly’s corniest, weirdest, most amusing tweets.
