Mulcair promises positive campaign despite attacks he calls ‘desperation’

SAINT-JEROME, Que. — On the anniversary of Jack Layton’s death, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is promising to run a positive campaign despite attacks from his rivals he calls a sign of desperation.

Speaking at a corn roast north of Montreal, Mulcair defended his national child-care strategy, saying it was something previous Conservative and Liberal governments failed to deliver.

The New Democrat leader, who was once a Liberal cabinet minister in Quebec, also rebuffed suggestions he was an “impostor” in the NDP, pointing out his long history with the party.

Mulcair described himself as the race’s only true progressive candidate.

He said his rivals’ attacks are a sign his campaign is going well.

A moment of silence was held for Layton, who died on Aug. 22, 2011.
