Toronto heat warning ends after record-breaking temps

Toronto’s recent heat warning had a record-breaking send-off, with all-time high temperatures reached at Pearson Airport.

The mercury hit 32.6 C on Monday, a record for not only August 17 but also for the year.

The previous record of 31.6 C was set almost 20 years ago, on Aug. 17, 1998, 680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said. Monday’s high of 32.6 was also a tie for the warmest day so far in 2015. Toronto also saw a high of 32.6 C on July 28.

Toronto wasn’t the only city with record-high temperatures on Monday. Hamilton hit 32.2 C, beating the record of 32 C set in 2009. And Collingwood saw a high of 31.7 C, topping the previous record of 31.1 C set in 2002.

Environment Canada officially ended its heat warning for the city on Tuesday morning, with the city calling off its heat alert hours later. The warning has also ended for Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions.

It will be a bad hair day in Toronto but that’s about it.

There’s a high of 29 C in the forecast, CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine said, and it will feel more like 36. There’s also a risk of showers and storms midday. The humidity and possibility for rain will last until Thursday.

A heat warning is only issued when there’s a high of 31 C or higher, a low of 20 C or warmer, or a humidex of 40, Taylor explained.

“We’ll be close to those numbers, but not quite,” Taylor added.
