Two drivers charged for driving the same vehicle drunk

The concept of being a designated driver clearly failed to resonate with two Oakville drivers who are facing alcohol-related charges while driving the same vehicle Tuesday night in Hamilton.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers were following up on a tip about a suspected impaired driver that was travelling east on Burlington Street, near the ramps to the Queen Elizabeth Way.

The vehicle in question came to a halt after hitting a guardrail, and it was at this time, police say, the driver and the passenger, both men, switched roles and continued on their journey into the unknown.

Police eventually caught up to the vehicle in Burlington, near Northshore Boulevard, and arrested both men.

No one was injured in the incident.

James Montagliani, 52; and Luis Canario, 54, both from Oakville, have been charged with a slew of offences including impaired driving and having liquor readily available.

Montagliani is also charged with refusing to supply a breath sample, while Canario faces charges of driving while prohibited and driving with a blood alcohol level over .08.

Both men were released on a promise that they would appear in court.
