Temperatures topping 35 C expected for Toronto this week

It’s going to be a scorcher.

The GTA is bracing for a full-fledged heat wave, the likes of which we haven’t seen so far this summer.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will feel as hot as 40 C with the humidex, according to Environment Canada.

“A potential three-day heat wave is set to hit the GTA starting Monday,” confirmed CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai.

On Monday morning, Environment Canada released a heat warning for all of the GTA through Thursday.

Monday’s temperatures are expected to reach 33 C, with Tuesday and Wednesday expected to top out at 34 C and 35 C respectively. Thursday and Friday will be a slightly cooler, with high temperatures expected to hit about 30.

An extreme heat alert is issued when the forecasted humidex is above 40 C for three consecutive days – something that could happen in Toronto this week.

The admittedly scorching temperatures may not be enough to break long-held weather records for the region.

The record temperature for Toronto on July 27 is 36.1 C, set in 1941. The record high for July 28 is 34.4 C, also set in 1941 and matched in 1964. And the record high for July 29 is 35.6 C, which was set back in 1949.

Regardless, the City of Toronto is advising people to take precautions in the high heat, including keeping hydrated, keeping blinds and drapes closed during the day and rescheduling outdoor activities.
