Remaining ducks released back into wild after Mimico Creek oil spill

By Charlene Close, News Staff

The last of the ducks rescued from the Mimico Creek oil spill have been cleaned up and are now back home.

The Toronto Wildlife Centre said the remaining group was released at 11 a.m. Monday.

The spill of mineral oil happened on July 13 after a truck rollover on Highway 427.

More than a 100 oil-covered ducks were captured and the centre’s staff and volunteers worked long hours to wash the oil from their feathers.

“We’ve dealt with many minor oil spills but we’ve never had this many animals impacted,” Andrew Wight, team leader for the wildlife rescue team, said in a release.

The first group of oil-free ducks were released into the wild on July 16. Only two remain in the centre’s care due to ongoing medical issues.
