Sunday service starts early on TTC subways

The TTC’s extended subway service for the Pan Am Games has begun.

On Sunday, riders were able to head underground starting at 6 a.m., instead of the subway’s usual start time of 9 a.m.

The TTC says it’s part of a commitment to keep the city moving during the games, which run until July 26.

Riders boarding that first morning train said they were thrilled to be able to get off the overnight bus and jump on the subway early.

“People need the subways on Sunday morning now, times have changed,” one rider explained. “My experience on the bus is it’s overcrowded. They need the subway. Six o’clock Sunday morning, every Sunday morning.”

Mayor John Tory agrees with riders and said he wants early Sunday service to become a permanent fixture to Toronto transit.

“Sundays are a busy day now, it’s a day of shopping and commerce,” he said. “Lots of people have to work, lots of people want to go to church or to go to their kid’s sports events. In a modern city like this, the subway should be open more than starting at nine o’clock.”
