U2 to live stream Toronto shows on Meerkat

It could be even better than the real thing.

One of the biggest bands in the world is going high tech to bring their fans an up-close look at their sold-out world tour.

U2 has hooked up with the live-streaming service Meerkat for their iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour – including two shows this week at the Air Canada Centre. Click here for the live stream.

“U2 has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technology,” said Ben Rubin, CEO of Meerkat, told USA Today. “Integrating Meerkat into their tour made perfect sense.”

One lucky fan is invited on stage to stream the show just steps away from Bono and The Edge.

The video is then projected on to a giant screen at the show and online to those who have subscribed to the Meerkat app.

“The audience is no longer going to be consuming, the audience is going to be the content,” Rubin explained during Mashable’s Digital Beltway conference last month.

So far 310 people have subscribed for the stream for Monday’s Toronto show.

The app has previously used by bands such as Van Halen, One Direction and Rascal Flatts.
