A 45-year-old man is dead and the province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an officer-involved shooting in the city’s west end.

Paramedics said the incident happened shortly after midnight on Gilbert Avenue, in the Eglinton Avenue West and Caledonia Road area.

Police were called to the scene for reports of a man armed with a hammer and identified him at Andrew Loku, 45, from Toronto.

The SIU said there was an interaction between the officers and a man, and one officer fired his gun.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
