1 dead after car plunges over guardrail near Black Creek & Hwy. 401

A 55-year-old man is dead and three others are injured after a car went over a guardrail in the west-end of the city on Saturday afternoon.

Capt. David Eckerman of Toronto Fire said the incident happened after 1 p.m. when a two-vehicle crash near Black Creek Drive and Highway 401 sent one car over the guardrail into the creek bed, landing upside down.

Const. Graham Williamson of the OPP said both vehicles — a Mercedes and a late-model Toyota Camry — were both northbound at the time of the crash. As a result of the collision, the Toyota went over the guardrail and dropped approximately three-to-four metres and landed on its roof on an embankment.

CityNews has learned that the man who died was a passenger in the back of the car and that the condition of the other three victims has been upgraded to non-life threatening.

Eckerman said all the people in the car were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of the Mercedes told CityNews the other driver clipped the rear of his vehicle.

“The car that went over the guardrail hit the back of my car and put me into a PIT maneuver,” Biagio Contento said. “I just spun violently several times and saw the car go over the guardrail.”

The northbound lanes of Black Creek Drive were reopened at Lawrence Avenue West shortly before 5:30 p.m.
