NEWS STUDY FINDS RAISING TAX FREE SAVINGS LIMIT OF LITTLE BENEFIT TO LOW, MIDDLE INCOME EARNERS
An analysis of federal tax data concludes the Harper government’s recent move to raise the contribution ceiling on tax-free savings accounts offers little to benefit low- and middle-income Canadians. The study by the left-leaning Broadbent Institute, comes after the government nearly doubled the maximum annual TFSA contribution limit to $10,000 from $5,500.

ELEMENT FINANCIAL BUYS GE CAPITAL’S FLEET MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR $8.6 BILLION
Element Financial Corporation says it has reached an agreement to buy GE Capital’s remaining fleet management operations in the U.S., Mexico, Australia and New Zealand for $8.6 billion in cash. The Toronto-based company says the acquisition includes staff, offices, agreements, intellectual property and other assets. Element had already bought the Canadian operations of GE Capital’s North American fleet management business in June 2013.

ONTARIO COUPLE SURVIVES A WEEK LOST IN B.C. BACKCOUNTRY
Search-and-rescue crews say they were shocked when an Ontario couple missing for seven days walked out of the backcountry in southern British Columbia. Lynne Carmody, 61, and Rick Moynan, 59, of North Bay, Ont., turned up virtually unharmed on Sunday around 4 p.m., just hours before crews were going to call off the search for them. They two got lost last week after going for a day hike in Cathedral Provincial Park in the South Okanagan. PHOTO.
