Weather to blame for overnight power outages across the GTA

The weather is being blamed for several power outages across the GTA.

Outages began around 10 p.m. on Saturday, affecting about 2,000 customers in Scarborough.

Not long after, pockets of outages then began to spread across the city. Toronto Hydro said several of those outages were caused by falling tree branches.

Toronto Hydro said that as of 7 a.m. Sunday crews continue to work to restore power to about 900 customers across the city.

“Right now we have approximately 900 customers without power. That’s spread out across various areas in the city. That’s down from about a high of approximately 4,000 overnight,” Toronto Hydro spokesperson Tori Gass explained.

Gass said they were prepared for possible weather related outages and had several crews on standby but the rain and winds made for difficult and dangerous working conditions.

PowerStream also reported small outages to some customers near Richmond Hill and Brampton.

Weather also forced the closure of Bay Street in both directions from Wellesley to St. Joseph streets due to downed power lines.
