Rogers, Bell debuting mobile payment app to Android, BlackBerry

Canada’s biggest telecom companies are expanding a mobile payments app as another option for consumers to pay for goods by simply using your smartphone.

Telus, BCE and Rogers are debuting a new version of the app called suretap, which was previously only available to Rogers customers.

Wireless customers using the app on Android or BlackBerry phones will be able to pay at any retailer with a contact-less payment terminal. The service is expected to be available through other device platforms by the end of 2015.

“Together, we are creating a win-win proposition for banks, merchants, and service providers-but most importantly, for the Canadian consumer,” Jeppe Dorff, president of suretap said in a release. “Millions of Canadians will now be able to enjoy the convenience of carrying this secure mobile payment experience on their smartphone wherever they go.”

The suretap app is backed by CIBC which, interestingly enough, has it’s own smartphone payment app already in use.

The telecom companies are going up against tech giants like Apple, Google and eBay, which have been swarming into mobile payments. It’s a market that could process $142 billion in transactions by 2019, according to Forrester Research.

Apple said its system will be available in one-million locations by July in the United States. The Wall Street Journal reports Apple Pay could come to Canada as early as November.
