HOV lanes for Pan Am Games off-limits for doctors on emergency runs

The HOV lanes created for the Pan Am Games on GTA highways are off-limits for doctors rushing to calls.

According to The Toronto Star, the Ministry of Transportation said that doctors and other health care providers are not exempted users of the HOV network, and a doctor responding to an emergency could be pulled over by police and forced to explain why they’re in the lanes.

Media, emergency vehicles, public transit, licensed taxis, athletes, coaches and volunteers with three or more people in the car can use the 185 kilometres of road. During the ParaPan games only two people are required to be in a car to use the lanes. The fine for misuse is $110 and three demerit points.

The interim lanes are currently being painted will be in effect on Highway 427, Highway 401, the DVP and the Gardiner Expressway from from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day starting June 29 until August 18.

The president of the Ontario Medical Assocation told the Star that he’s confident doctors will be able to do their jobs despite the bottlenecks.
