Ask a celeb: Judd Apatow, Amy Schumer, Hilary Duff on their favourite TV dads

By The Canadian Press

TV has offered up a wide gamut of dads over the years.

Remember big-hearted housekeeper Tony Micelli (played by Tony Danza) and his signature line “Hey, oh, oh, hey” on “Who’s the Boss?”

Or Ed O’Neill’s role as the irreverent shoe salesman Al Bundy on “Married with Children”?

And who can forget James Avery’s Philip Banks, always putting Will Smith’s character in his place on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

With Father’s Day on the horizon, The Canadian Press asked several celebrities who their favourite TV dad is.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow chose lawyer Doug Lawrence, played by James Broderick, from the 1970s drama “Family.”

“I’m going WAY back!” Apatow exclaimed, before squeezing in another choice: “I’m going Dick Van Patten back on ‘Eight is Enough.'”

Comedy star Amy Schumer chose cantankerous Frank Costanza, played by Jerry Stiller, from “Seinfeld.”

“He looks like my dad, who was very yell-y and sarcastic,” Schumer said.

Hilary Duff, singer and star of “Younger,” initially paid respect to a fictional paternal figure from her past.

“Lizzie McGuire’s dad, of course,” said a laughing Duff, who played the titular character in the “Lizzie McGuire” TV show and movie.

“Growing up, I probably loved ‘Full House’ the most. I loved Bob Saget.”

“Saturday Night Live” star Vanessa Bayer had a few favourites, including Chicago cop Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) on “Family Matters.”

“He reminds me of my dad,” said Bayer. “The other dad that kind of reminds me of my dad is the dad on ‘Dinosaurs.’

“And I loved the dad on ‘(Beverly Hills, 90210)’, Mr. Walsh. He was a great dad.”
